Joyful Courage for Parents of Teens

::::

This week I am revisiting my conversation with Amy Lang from the Sex Ed for Parents of Teens Mini Summit in the spring of 2020.

Amy has been a guest on the podcast and is a super great friend of mine. She is my go to person when I have questions about my teen’s sexual development.

Amy has been a sex health educator for over 20 years and helps parents of all beliefs talk with their kids of any age about the birds and bees.

She is the author of an award-winning book, Birds and Bees and your kids- a guide to sharing your beliefs about sexuality, love, and relationship. As well as Dating Smarts- what every teen needs to know to date, relate, or wait

Takeaways from the show:

  • Family values
  • Your kids are going to have sex
  • The importance of communication with your teens
  • Sex safety
  • Stop filtering for your kids
  • Broader ways of looking at sexuality
  • Have conversations about values
  • Don’t be afraid to prepare before a conversation

What does joyful courage mean to you?

I love that term. For me it’s how do you want to live your life? In love or fear? I love the two words together because it gives you the permission to be joyful and loving and add some fun into the fearful moments of life. Joyful courage to me is how I want to live. That’s what I want to model for my kids.

See you next week!! :)

What does joyful courage mean to you?

What comes to mind is really tied to what we’ve been talking about. The bitter and the sweet of these relationships with our kids. They’re so important to us and we have to be courageous to be able to let them go. They need roots and wings. We can’t keep them in a cage, we have to let them fly.

See you next week!! :)

Joyful Courage to me means very much what Brenne Brown would talk about when it comes to being brave, showing up as yourself and finding joy in the experience of living. Really living and receiving all the beauty and experiencing all the joy. Sometimes we forget to enjoy our kids because we focus so much on parenting them and all the tools. I think Joyful Courage is really allowing ourselves to experience it as a whole.

See you next week!! :)

This is a group for moms of tweens and teens. Moms who are looking for that extra layer of growing and learning around showing up through the twists and turns of adolescence.

It’s a messy time.

Maybe you have raised your kids with PD and are finding that you are unsure what this looks like during middle and high school?

Maybe you are just coming into the positive parenting conversation, and need support for shifting into a more connected, less controlling role with your growing child.

Or maybe you are looking for a community of like-minded mamas that are passionate about staying in the motherhood conversation.

We’ve got you.

Here’s what some of the mamas are saying:

“It is great to know that I have a place to go when I'm really struggling with parenting. I feel more hope having this group.”

“I don’t feel as alone, it’s so nice to communicate with so many Mom’s who have an idea of what I’m experiencing. I’ve never felt supported in my parenting journey before and you help me feel supported, thank you Casey! I love the community space. It’s so helpful to be able to reach out for support when I’m experiencing a parenting challenge and to be able to support other Moms who need support too.”

What does Joyful Courage mean to you?

This whole book I wrote has been a massive exercise of joyful courage to me. This was the book that all of that crap that I’ve been through has led to and I’m so proud and happy. It has also been terrifying to put my story out there into the world knowing that substance use disorder is really encamped so there’s people with really strong feelings around how things are expressed. The whole thing has been sheer happiness that this thing is out there but also I’ve been using a lot of courage because it’s really scary to put your story out into the world but it is also incredibly empowering.

See you next week!! :)

PARENTING FOR THE SEASON YOU’RE IN

I took the feedback of all the parents who went through in March and have added a week and tweaked the content a bit to make it an EVER MORE transformational learning experience!!

ENROLLMENT IS OPEN AND SPACE IS LIMITED.

Parenting for the Season You're in (or “the seasons course” as I like to call it) is a five week class for parents of middle and high school aged kids. It is a space for learning the PD tools that support connection and firmness, as well as a gentle look at the ways we may be getting in the way of our adolescents' growth and development.

We will connect around the collective experience of raising teens, learn about teen brain development, consider our parenting style, embody connected firmness, and learn encouragement tools that will sustain us in the years ahead.

After going through the program in March, one parent shared:

I have been struggling with consequences for my teens - what should they be and why aren't they working! We have been locked in a power struggle with my younger teen and I found myself trying to force him to do what I want - control instead of collaboration. This program helped me pivot away from consequences and reframe situations with a view on solutions, and really thinking harder about what part of the work or choice is really mine and which is his..

And another parent offered

I loved how it consistently (the course) helped me to see another way and learn how to be and remember to be in relationship with my teen and not simply trying to fix or control the challenging behaviors.

This is deep learning, my friends, check it out at www.joyfulcourage.com/seasons to get more info and claim your spot!

What does joyful courage mean to you?

Full expression. I also think of the words pleasure and audacity when I think of joyful courage. It’s not about not being afraid, it’s stepping into the arena even though we are afraid. So to me joyful courage means stepping into the arena, whatever that means to you, in the fullest expression of yourself and doing so in a way that also focuses on joy and pleasure.

See you next week!! :)

Hey friends!

You all know that I am DOWN with therapy. I am a strong believer that the parenting journey brings up ALL THE THINGS that we are carrying around from our childhood, all the beliefs about our worthiness and enoughness - and it can really get in the way of creating deep, authentic, HEALTHY relationships with the people we love the most, in the HERE and NOW.

This is why I am so proud to be partnered with Better Help. Because WANTING a therapist and FINDING the right one for you can be super challenging.

Timing, travel, cost - all of it can get in the way of getting to the soul healing work that therapy can be…

But Better Help is a solution. Better Help is online counseling - a service that provides support via your computer or smartphone - you can choose to connect through conference calls, phone calls or even text messages.

It might seem weird to think about NOT stepping into an office and meeting with your therapist face to face, but I am here to say FROM MY OWN EXPERIENCE that it is just as powerful to work with someone via the computer or phone. Shout out to my therapist, Mark, who helped me through my darkest parenting days AND a major family health crisis…

I am confident you can find someone to support you, too.

And the Joyful Courage community gets 10% off their first month!

Living Joyful Courage MEMBERSHIP
Community and Coaching for moms raising adolescents

You know how I am so passionate about supporting parents in our journey through the teens years…  You have seen me really niche down and offer resources and coaching for this super special parenting season.

And YOU know that I believe that community is EVERYTHING, right?

Well, I am creating the MOST amazing community space for moms navigating the tween and teen years -- the Living Joyful Courage Membership.

The terrain gets ROUGH when we move into the adolescent years with our kids…  Even the most committed “positive parenting” mom may be finding herself out of her depth when the challenges start to show up.

It’s messy.

And moms need a place and a community that can be the soft landing for her to roll around in the messiness. A place that celebrates the challenges as opportunities for personal growth and discovery. A place that puts relationship first - relationship with self, with our kids, with the world around us.

I am really just teasing you with this right now. Doors will open for this magical space mid April…  If you are interested in being on the wait list to find out more go to www.joyfulcourage.com/ljc.

My guests today are Ted Bunch and Anna Marie Johnson Teague.

Ted and Anna Marie are friends, parents, and anti-violence educators. They work for A Call to Men, helping men and boys promote healthy manhood and prevent violence and discrimination.

Ted works with professional athletes, business leaders, activists, and boys just like the ones you have.

Anna Marie is a storyteller at heart and a devoted boy mom. She is nationally recognized for creating and executing award-winning, multi-platform campaigns to advance critical social issues like improving education and ending violence against women.

Where to find Ted and Anna Marie:

The Book of Dares | Website | FaceBook | Twitter | Instagram | LinkedIn

What does Joyful Courage mean to you?

Anna Marie: In the context of this conversation, it’s authenticity for two reasons. I think it requires joyful courage to be your authentic self but I also think authenticity will foster joyful courage in your life.

Ted: I’m inspired by the joyful courage that I see in our youth. I think about my children and I think about my son who came out as gay when he was 15, he’s now 18, and the courage it took for that and the joy he’s experiencing in embracing his full self.

Also when I see Anna Marie’s son Jack wanting to be the best son and man he can be and understanding all that he is in being a white male at 12 years old with certain privilege. Just as my children, while 4 of the 6 are black, have privilege as well. There's a race privilege, there’s a class privilege and there’s a gender privilege. The next generation is really giving me joyful courage.

See you next week!! :)

He is also the executive medical director of behavioral health at Sharecare Inc. and a research affiliate at MIT.

What does Joyful Courage mean to you?

See you next week!! :)

Casey does a brilliant job of teaching the core concepts and guiding you through the challenges of putting them into practice. This program is for everyone. If you are familiar with Positive Discipline it’s a fantastic refresher. If you are new to Positive Discipline this will be a game-changer for your family. Your time and money will be very well spent. ”

— Mama Sarah

“I loved learning what draws us closer to our children and what pushes our children away. I know this stuff, however it was good to have it in a list that so clearly gave me visuals for how those actions show up in my life.”

Parenting for the Season You’re In - MIDDLE SCHOOL AND BEYOND

I am super excited to announce that there is a BRAND NEW LIVE CLASS happening for parents of Middle Schoolers and BEYOND in March!

Each week will be a live session with me, where I will deliver content and facilitate learning, followed by time for parent hot seats - time for parents to share their real and relevant challenges and get laser sharp coaching from me!  AND, each week participants will get a downloadable guide as well as a companion audio meditation to use to stay connected to what they are working to integrate into their relationships with their adolescent.

Some of what we will cover includes:

  • Being with the roller coaster of the teen years
  • Recognize where we are adding to our kids discouragement, and how to step back into relationship
  • Communication tools that build resilience and connection
  • How kindness and firmness looks the same, and different as our kids get older
  • Being the parent you want to be

School, screens, peers, attitude - all of what you learn during the Seasons course will support you showing up to the challenges of THIS season in a way that aligns with your values.

Here’s what parents said about the Seasons course:

“In these uncertain times I needed the grounding I get from Positive Discipline.

— Mama Kimberly
