She is especially passionate about helping individuals see how healing codependency and perfectionism can lead to a more joy filled life.

Alana has lectured on child development at The College of Staten Island. Her first book Raising Empowered Children: The Codependent Perfectionist’s Guide to Parenting is now available on amazon.com

This week’s guest is DJ Johnson. DeAntwann “DJ” Johnson is a husband, father, author, mentor, coach, counselor, and sports statistician. He grew up in the Indiana foster care system and yet despite that, has gone on to lead a successful, and fulfilling life. Before spending nine years in the foster care system, DJ suffered child abuse, domestic abuse, and emotional trauma. At one point, he wanted to end his life, but he realized that he was on this earth for a purpose.

DJ fulfills that purpose by using his experiences not only to help establish relationships with the students he serves, but he helps parents better connect with their teenagers.

DJ specializes in helping parents bridge the communication gap between them and their child to ensure that their child has room to be the best versions of themselves.

Takeaways from the show:

What does Joyful Courage mean to you?

When I think about courage, I think about when you’re initially jumping into courage and there’s fear behind it or it’s a serious thing. When we add joy to it i think it’s the excitement of doing something that's mostly going to end up in a good result.

So Joyful Courage to me is “I am happily jumping out and taking a leap to something I think is ultimately going to benefit me and my family.”

See you next week!! :)

Parenting for The Season You’re In

Parenting for The Season You’re In is a program for parents who are looking for deeper understanding of the challenges they are facing, how they may be contributing to the challenges, and tools and strategies for not only problem solving, but also experiencing more joy on the parenting journey.

It’s a funky season of parenting. You may be still anticipating the change you know is coming in your child, or perhaps you are witnessing it, and at a loss for how to be there in a way that is helpful and forwarding.

Screen time drama takes on a new intensity, peer influence increases, the mood swings that show up when our kids are trying to figure out who it is they are…. Everything is SUCH A BIG DEAL.

And we are on the sidelines, unsure of what boundaries to hold - when to be flexible, when to be firm…. Feeling so connected and confident one minute, only to spiral into worries and “what ifs” the next.

Sign up now at www.joyfulcourage.com/seasons

The six sessions start Thursday, September 23rd and run Thursdays for 6 weeks from 5:30-7:30pm PDT

What does joyful courage mean to you?

I love that term. For me it’s how do you want to live your life? In love or fear? I love the two words together because it gives you the permission to be joyful and loving and add some fun into the fearful moments of life. Joyful courage to me is how I want to live. That’s what I want to model for my kids.

See you next week!! :)

What does joyful courage mean to you?

What comes to mind is really tied to what we’ve been talking about. The bitter and the sweet of these relationships with our kids. They’re so important to us and we have to be courageous to be able to let them go. They need roots and wings. We can’t keep them in a cage, we have to let them fly.

See you next week!! :)

What does Joyful Courage mean to you?

Joyful Courage to me means very much what Brenne Brown would talk about when it comes to being brave, showing up as yourself and finding joy in the experience of living. Really living and receiving all the beauty and experiencing all the joy. Sometimes we forget to enjoy our kids because we focus so much on parenting them and all the tools. I think Joyful Courage is really allowing ourselves to experience it as a whole.

See you next week!! :)

What does Joyful Courage mean to you?

This whole book I wrote has been a massive exercise of joyful courage to me. This was the book that all of that crap that I’ve been through has led to and I’m so proud and happy. It has also been terrifying to put my story out there into the world knowing that substance use disorder is really encamped so there’s people with really strong feelings around how things are expressed. The whole thing has been sheer happiness that this thing is out there but also I’ve been using a lot of courage because it’s really scary to put your story out into the world but it is also incredibly empowering.

See you next week!! :)
